South African anti-apartheid activist, born in 1946, who co-founded the South African Students Organisation, which evolved into the Black Consciousness Movement. Biko played a significant role in organizing the protests which led to the Soweto uprising in 1976. He was beaten to death by the apartheid police in 1977.
